The Feelings Gym: Why Therapy is Like Working Out for Your Emotions

Why do I call therapy the feelings gym? Because no matter what kind of growth you’re looking for, it will always require effort. The unsexy truth about personal development and self-care is that they demand discipline.

It takes discipline to understand why you think the way you do, why you behave the way you do, and to develop the habits, skills, and mindset necessary for meaningful change. And let’s be honest—you’re not always going to feel like doing it.

But once we make peace with the fact that everything worthwhile requires effort, we can begin to let go of the excuses that keep us stuck in unproductive, unhealthy patterns.

Practical Steps to Start Your Emotional Fitness Journey

  1. Identify Your Excuses: When something feels challenging or overwhelming, ask yourself what excuse is holding you back.

  2. Find the Solution: Immediately counter that excuse with a practical step forward.

  3. Reflect and Adjust: If you’re still not taking action, ask yourself:

    • Am I avoiding the effort required?

    • Am I stuck in perfectionism, waiting for everything to feel “just right”?

Remember, it doesn’t have to be perfect to be progress. Personally, I’m working on embracing the mantra: done is better than perfect. This mindset shift has helped me take steps forward, even when things don’t feel ideal.

As we approach the new year, let’s commit to the effort required to become the healthiest, most authentic versions of ourselves.
